I was approached by Andrew Brew in designing a logo for his new martial arts classes; operating under Grappling Guild - a Plymouth-based Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu start-up.
So I created an emblem with two people joining together in an arm-wrestling style, with a black BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) belt flowing around in the middle to symbolise unity. We also agreed on having both T-shirts having the olive colour, to suggest every student being on the same team.
The main design is confined in a circle with the addition of stars along the top, an element from the Brazil flag - the country Grappling Guild’s style of Jiu-Jitsu originates from. Rounded off with a design of a black BJJ belt along the bottom, featuring a signature red part on the right-hand side and the Grappling Guild name in gold lettering placed in the middle.
Original sketch of the 'arm wrestling' pose, before scanned, drawn and refined digitally and placement of the BJJ belt that flows around the arms.
